A Powder River Basin oil and gas producer had been shut-in for 18 months due to a lack of gas offtake and an inability to flare - creating a stranded asset with 100+ bopd stuck in the ground. By renting 360 Energy's Apex Gas Offtake solution, the operator was able to resume oil production and turn previously flared natural gas into supplemental cash flow - all without capex, dedications or long term commitments.
The producer drilled this exploration well in 2023 and produced it until their flare exemption expired. With no traditional pipeline takeaway, the well was shut-in indefinitely. The producer analyzed options to tie the well into nearby pipelines but those projects were capital intensive and uneconomic. To bring the well back online, the producer needed a flexible, commercially viable solution that could be deployed quickly.
360 Energy deployed (3) of their rental Apex Gas Offtake units to the customers site. The Apex system was uniquely suited for this site due to the gas’s high BTU content and harsh ambient conditions. Further, the Apex system was able to overcome a lack traditional infrastructure, notably no cell service, fiber internet or utilities - showcasing its ability to thrive off-the-grid.
Apex key components:
- Fully off-grid power and compute infrastructure powered by Starlink
- Mobile natural gas generators and data centers
- Deployed and operational within 60 days of signing the contract
- Enclosed and heat traced to handle arctic winter conditions
The Apex Rental solution proves that gas offtake can be deployed anywhere without having to sink capital or sign long term commitments.
Oil Production: 100+ bopd is now flowing from a well that had been shut-in for 18+ months
Gas Monetization: 1 Mmcf/d of previously flared gas is now being monetized in the Apex distributed compute system
Commercially Neutral: Apex provides a new revenue stream for the producer that offsets the Apex rental cost
360 Energy transformed a remote asset with limited options into a productive lease that will generate millions of dollars of annual revenue for the producer. By commercially capturing gas in one integrated system, the barriers to production have been removed creating a repeatable blueprint for field-wide deployment.
This case demonstrates the impact of off-grid compute infrastructure in reshaping oilfield economics:
Operators Win: by reducing emissions, increasing oil revenue and driving new supplemental revenue streams
Landowners Benefit: through resumed production and renewed royalty payments
Communities Benefit: through job creation and less emissions
Wyoming Wins: through increased production and severance tax payments
With 360 Energy, forced shut-ins due to a lack of gas offtake is a thing of the past. Through continued deployment and operations, Apex Gas Offtake is proving to be the premier technology to bring shut-in oil production back online without having to sink capital or agree to punitive midstream dedications.
